At Home with Mr. Themis is an online exhibition curated by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative (SNFPHI) that makes Themis Ragias’ personal collection of art and curiosities accessible to the public.
Housed in Ragias’ apartment in Exarchia, Athens, this collection constitutes a one-of-a-kind blend of folk art, fine art, books, and kitsch objects. While the collection’s heterogeneous nature enables diverse investigations of the cultural, political, and economic life of Greece, this exhibition focuses on how humble crafts and souvenirs trace Greece’s encounter with capitalism and the emergence of local economies that cater to the tourist industry. The exhibition is conceptualized as a perpetual work-in-progress, structured around a series of visits to Ragias’ home. It begins outside his apartment building, a fine example of Le Corbusier-inspired modernism that proves to be in stark contrast to the domestic space that Ragias has created inside.
